Alhambra Credit Union was organized in 1956 by the teachers and staff of Alhambra Elementary School District. The District was growing by leaps and bounds due to the housing developments in northwest Phoenix including those by John F. Long and Hallcraft Homes.
The teachers and staff were looking for housing and services in the areas that had been farm and dairy lands. They also needed a local source of funds that would service educators since salaries for tax-supported institutions were rather meager.
The Credit Union started at the Alhambra School District Office for a number of years and all the clerical functions were handled by the District Office staff at no cost to the Credit Union. Later, as the District and the Credit Union grew, a room was set aside for the Credit Union and a manager was hired by the Credit Union.
The Alhambra School District grew, and then grew some more, and they needed the office space occupied by the Credit Union. In 1997 the Credit Union purchased the building on North 35th Avenue and had it remodeled to fit the Credit Union’s operations. Several of the Western Maricopa County school districts were aware of Alhambra Credit Union and a branch office was established.
In 1992, a branch office was opened in the Agua Fria Union High School District office. Aside from Agua Fria, the branch serves the surrounding districts of Litchfield, Avondale, Pendergast, Littleton, the Estrella Mountain Community College, and surrounding communities. In the year 2000, as the membership grew, the branch moved into a leased building on Western Avenue.
Things changed in 2013 to provide service closer to credit union members now living further north of Avondale, the Credit Union has moved the branch from ‘downtown’ Avondale to the current location on West Indian School Road. This location provides a larger office space to better serve our members.
The Alhambra Credit Union is administered by a Board of Directors elected by the Credit Union’s membership. The day-to-day operations are handled by employees who are supervised by the President/CEO.
